The Strawberry Cake

I talk about a strawberry cake from my childhood in the book. My artist grandfather used to take me to museums in Japan, and it was our routine to have a cup of tea and a slice of strawberry cake. Years later, I was reintroduced to the same strawberry cake in the U.S. through my friends Brenda and Ted Jones. It was made by Chef Luc Beaudet of Douceur de France in Georgia, USA, and it brought the memories of my childhood. I have been in the U.S. since Feb. 4, and I had an opportunity to meet Chef Luc and tasted his cake again on Feb. 11. You will read about the huge surprise that day in the book.

Prior to my departure for the U.S. on Feb. 3, Jen, Murat, Shell, and Marc joined me for dinner at Il Teatro to celebrate my finishing the manuscript. They have heard about the strawberry cake from my childhood. I was going to surprise them by serving a strawberry cake, made by Pastry Chef Laurent at Four Seasons Doha. It turned out that Chef and Maxime, the manager of Il Teato, gave me a bigger surprise instead. Not only the chef made a beautiful strawberry cake, he also created a beautiful edible book, called “Mickie’s Memoir”. Inside the book were rows of fresh raspberries. Wow…… it was incredible!

I am still in the U.S.  On Feb. 17, I ended up in the emergency room at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and am still there. If you have a special food you remember from your childhood, please post in the blog. I look forward to learning about your childhood memory. Mickie

Hi, Mickie! Glad you finished your book. Looks like it had a delicious ending. :-) My favorite childhood dessert (and still is today) was my mother's banana pudding! Wow, wish I had some right now...still warm, just out of the oven. Hmm, Hmm, Good!!
God bless!

Favorite childhood cake was Red Velvet! I couldn't believe that a cake could be that color. The vanilla cream icing didn't hurt either. Safe travels back to Doha.

Thank you for posting your comments. I have safely arrived in Doha last night and been up since 3:00 a.m.

Wayne, you are making me hungry for banana putting now in Doha. My favorite one is from Longstreet Cafe in Gainesville, Georgia. I can just taste it.... a wonderful Southern treat!

Matthew, a rich slice of red velvet cake....yam... My friend, Debbie Moore (Martha Stewart of the South), makes a wonderful version of it. Yes, I agree the frosting does the great job for accompanying the cake!

Mickie

Hi Mickie

Glad to hear you are safely back in Doha.
You asked for it, so hear is my favorite childhood dessert was homemade ice cream. I think the best part was how it was made and who was there to enjoy. It was quite a summer tradition. It took place on my great-grandmothers large front porch and all the cousins and aunts and uncles were there. Ghost stories were told when darkness settled over the Texas skies. The memories were delicious, scary and loads of fun.
By the way, I took the strawberry cake picture.

Sherry, thank you for talking about your favorite childhood dessert filled with wonderful memories of your great-grandmother and all extended family members - lots of stories and laughters. I can just imagine hearing them.

By the way, I do give a credit to Sherry for taking the photo of me with Chef Luc with her cell phone back in the U.S. And then, Judy Mac figured out to send it to me. I believe Marc took the picture of Maxime and me in Doha.

Mickie - so glad I had a chance to see you, we always manage to have some awesome foods but most of all it's the company and the stories I love best...okay and the desserts :-) love you, Gloria

Hey Gloria! It was great to see you as well. I know that we always have great food to accompany our visits. I am writing this from the Ritz Carlton Club Lounge on the 23rd floor over looking the beautiful blue-colored Arabian Sea. Mickie

Hmm. Favorite childhood dessert, fresh rasberries with cream from my Grandparents backyard garden, angel food cake and weekly ice cream trips with my Grandpa to Bridgeman's in Minnesota.

Thanks for helping me think of those lovely memories Mickie! and yes the strawberry cake was amazing!

Fresh raspberries with cream? That sounds delicious! Oh I love angel food cake also. I put a big portion of whipped cream on top, and that does it for me.

Hi Mickie!

I'm hoping you're feeling much better now. We SO enjoyed seeing you at the reception at Ann's home in Dawsonville. It was so nice to see you and to hear all that you had to share. I can't wait to read your book now.

My mom made the BEST chicken dinner with German chocolate cake for dessert. She was a wonderful cook. I miss her terribly, but I have figured out how to make "Grandma's chicken" and my husband is in 7th heaven when I make it for him.

All my best.
